UN Committee Warns of Worsening Fragmentation in Palestinian Territories

(MENAFN) According to reports from a United Nations Security Council debate, a senior UN committee official warned that conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories are rapidly deteriorating, with increasing fragmentation and instability.

The official, speaking in his capacity as vice chair of the UN committee focused on Palestinian rights, stated that the current trajectory does not point toward peace. Instead, he said the situation is moving toward greater division, displacement, and worsening hardship, which he attributed to ongoing occupation policies and related measures.

He argued that Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem should be understood as a single interconnected political and territorial entity, rather than separate issues. He emphasized that treating them in isolation, particularly separating Gaza from developments elsewhere, undermines any path toward a comprehensive resolution.

He further warned that humanitarian considerations in Gaza cannot be addressed in isolation while broader political and territorial disputes continue elsewhere, suggesting that such an approach would prevent meaningful progress toward peace.

Regarding Jerusalem, he expressed concern over unilateral actions that, in his view, alter the city’s status and affect access to cultural and religious sites for Palestinians.

The official called on the Security Council to take stronger action to protect civilians and to oppose measures he described as annexation, demographic changes, and collective punishment. He also urged implementation of internationally supported frameworks aimed at advancing a two-state solution and ending the long-standing conflict.

The remarks were delivered during an open UN session focused on developments in the Middle East, where delegates presented differing interpretations of the situation and possible pathways toward resolution.
