Trump Reveals Staggering Death Toll Hiding in Gaza's Ruins

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump revealed Tuesday that recovery teams unearthed up to a hundred additional bodies for every deceased hostage retrieved from the devastated Gaza Strip, painting a grim picture of the territory's destruction.

"Believe it or not, Hamas worked along with Israel, and they dug and they dug and they dug. It's a tough thing to do, going through, bodies all over, passing up 100 bodies, sometimes, for each one that they found," Trump said during his annual State of the Union address.

The president hailed the full retrieval of all deceased hostages as an unexpected achievement. "They found all 28. Nobody thought that was possible, but we did it," he added, referring to the bodies of the hostages that were eventually returned to Israel.

Trump also moved to minimize the scale of Israel's continued military campaign in Gaza, which has pressed on despite a ceasefire he played a central role in brokering. "Of course, the war in Gaza, which proceeds at a very low level, it's just about there. And I want to thank Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for your help," he said.

Both Witkoff and Kushner have been at the forefront of the administration's diplomatic push across Gaza and the broader region.

The conflict was triggered on Oct. 8, 2023, when Israel launched a relentless military offensive on the Gaza Strip following a Hamas-led cross-border attack the previous day that claimed roughly 1,200 Israeli lives. Since then, the assault has killed more than 72,000 people — predominantly women and children — while leaving over 171,000 others wounded.
