US Defense Secretary Announces Pentagon Cuts Harvard Programs
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Friday that the department is “formally ending ALL Professional Military Education, fellowships, and certificate programs with Harvard University,” calling the move “long overdue.”
“Harvard is woke; The War Department is not,” he added.
Hegseth explained that, historically, the Pentagon sent “our best and brightest officers” to Harvard in hopes the university would gain a better understanding of “our warrior class.”
However, he claimed that “too many of our officers came back looking too much like Harvard – heads full of globalist and radical ideologies that do not improve our fighting ranks.”
The secretary further accused Harvard of fostering a campus climate that “celebrated Hamas,” “allowed attacks on Jews,” and “promotes discrimination based on race.” He also alleged that some research programs at the university had collaborated with the Chinese Communist Party, noting that similar partnerships with other institutions will be reviewed.
The Pentagon said the suspension of programs will take effect in the 2026-27 academic year, though personnel currently enrolled in courses will be allowed to complete them.
Tensions between Harvard and the administration of US President Donald Trump have been ongoing, stemming from the university’s refusal to make changes to its admissions and governance policies, as well as efforts to improve campus discipline following pro-Palestinian demonstrations linked to the Hamas-Israel conflict and the destruction in Gaza.
