Elon Musk accepts Netanyahu’s invitation despite Gaza crisis

(MENAFN) Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has agreed to visit Israel following an invitation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, despite the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza that has claimed over 71,000 lives in the past two years.

According to a statement from Netanyahu’s office, the prime minister met with Musk and invited him to take part in a Smart Transportation Conference scheduled for March, an offer that Musk accepted. The discussions reportedly included collaboration with Tesla and the advancement of legislation concerning autonomous vehicles.

Netanyahu and Musk also explored opportunities to “promote and develop artificial intelligence technologies in Israel.” “We intend to propel Israel forward and turn it into a global leader in the field, just as we did in cyber and other technologies,” Netanyahu told Musk, according to the statement.

The announcement comes as Gaza continues to face severe hardships. Since October 2023, the Israeli military’s operations have resulted in over 71,200 deaths, mostly women and children, and more than 171,000 injuries. Infrastructure in the territory has been largely destroyed, and despite a ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10, Israel continues to restrict crossings, limiting the delivery of humanitarian aid and halting reconstruction efforts.

Netanyahu is also facing international legal scrutiny. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against him and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Gaza conflict.
