UNRWA says storm has further worsened living conditions in Gaza
On social media, UNRWA said the storm “is worsening the already dire living conditions of thousands of people living in tents or damaged shelters.” The agency highlighted that families forced from their homes face heightened risks as severe weather hits overcrowded and unsafe shelters.
UNRWA added that Israeli authorities have blocked the agency from directly delivering humanitarian aid into Gaza for months, limiting the scale of assistance reaching those in need.
The agency reported deaths caused by collapsed buildings and exposure to the cold, particularly among children. “This must stop. Aid must be allowed in at scale, now,” UNRWA stressed.
Since last week, thousands of tents housing survivors of Israel’s war have become flooded, soaking bedding, clothing, and food supplies, leaving hundreds of families exposed to harsh winter conditions. UNRWA estimates that the Gaza Strip needs around 300,000 tents and prefabricated housing units to meet the basic shelter needs of Palestinians following two years of Israeli attacks that destroyed much of the enclave’s infrastructure.
Israel’s two-year military campaign in Gaza killed over 70,000 Palestinians and severely damaged the territory. A fragile ceasefire agreement took effect in October, temporarily halting hostilities.
The Israeli Prime Minister is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. This week, the ICC appeals chamber rejected Israel’s legal attempt to block an investigation into its actions during the conflict.
