Freezing Cold Claims Infant’s Life in Gaza
Gaza's Health Ministry announced that Saeed Asaad Abideen, just one month old, succumbed to the plummeting temperatures. His death marks the 13th fatality among patients hospitalized due to the recent weather crisis and severe cold front sweeping the territory.
A day earlier, Gaza's Civil Defense issued an urgent warning that the intense cold wave poses a lethal threat to children, noting widespread gaps in shelter and heating capabilities as humanitarian conditions deteriorate following what the statement termed "Israel's genocide in the enclave."
Massive displacement has left hundreds of thousands of Palestinians enduring catastrophic circumstances after losing their homes to destruction and forced evacuation. Numerous families now occupy tents or improvised shelters, confronting critical deficits of blankets, heat sources, and winter garments as overnight temperatures plunge.
Gaza's government media office has consistently charged Israel with violating commitments established in the Oct. 10 ceasefire agreement and accompanying humanitarian protocols, specifically citing failures to allow entry of shelter materials and provide 300,000 tents and mobile housing units for displaced populations.
Israel has killed nearly 70,700 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 171,100 others in attacks in Gaza since October 2023, before the assault came to a halt under the ceasefire deal that took effect on Oct. 10.
