Trump says ‘nothing’s going to jeopardize’ Gaza truce
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while traveling from Japan to South Korea, Trump acknowledged the strikes had occurred after an Israeli soldier was reportedly killed. “The Israelis hit back, and they should hit back when that happens,” he said.
When asked if the airstrikes could threaten the truce, Trump replied: “Nothing’s going to jeopardize that.” He added, “Hamas is a very small part of peace in the Middle East. They said they would be good, and if they’re good, they’re going to be happy, and if they’re not good, they’re going to be terminated.”
Trump noted international interest in the peace process: “We have many countries that are willing to do that,” citing Japan’s willingness to participate in Middle East efforts. He also confirmed progress under his plan: “We’re getting into phase two,” referring to the next stage of his 20-point Gaza initiative.
Reports indicate at least 18 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on Tuesday, including attacks near the Shati refugee camp, east of Deir al-Balah, and around the Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City.
The ceasefire, which took effect on October 10, was designed to facilitate the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, support Gaza’s reconstruction, and establish a governing framework independent of Hamas.
Since October 2023, Israeli operations in Gaza have reportedly killed over 68,500 people—mostly women and children—and injured more than 170,000.
