Francesca Albanese Slams EU for Backing Israel’s ‘Genocide’ in Gaza

(MENAFN) A top United Nations official has sharply criticized the European Union, accusing it of knowingly enabling what she described as Israel’s "genocide of the Palestinians," after the bloc declined to suspend its longstanding trade and political agreement with Israel.

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory, delivered the rebuke in a post on X Wednesday. “The EU, which had already disgraced itself by entering the Association agreement with Apartheid Israel years ago, is now refusing to suspend it,” she wrote. “This is the final piece of evidence that the EU is consciously supporting Israel’s genocide of the Palestinians. This risks to be the end of EU values.”

Albanese called on individual EU countries to take independent legal steps, saying: “I hope you will activate the (Court of Justice of the European Union) CJEU. But meanwhile, please remember that regional agreements do not obliterate your obligations under international law.”

She further urged decisive action: “Cut ties with Israel, starting with trade including of weapons. Do the right thing. Our European history commands it.”

The EU-Israel Association Agreement, a key framework regulating bilateral economic and political relations, contains a binding clause that mandates adherence to human rights and democratic norms. Violations of this clause can trigger punitive measures, including suspension of the agreement.

EU foreign ministers convened Monday and Tuesday to assess the escalating crisis in Gaza, where civilian deaths continue to mount. Despite widespread international concern, internal divisions prevented the bloc from agreeing on sanctions or halting the agreement.

Since launching its offensive on Gaza in late October 2023, Israel has drawn global condemnation for its sustained military campaign, which has killed more than 58,000 Palestinians—most of them women and children.

The continuous airstrikes have devastated the territory, leading to acute food insecurity and disease outbreaks.

In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza.

Simultaneously, Israel is facing a separate genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its ongoing military actions in the enclave.
